This is off topic:

Two months ago, I resolved to create a gaming system.

I decided to do this for the following reasons:

1) I have some free time. Gao Qi is studying daily for the next several months, and I thought I should have a project for myself.
2) I have very fond memories of playing 1st Ed AD&D. I think the later Editions lack the spirit and intellectual substance of 1st Edition, and I believe it’s possible to create a system that has that flavor, but makes more sense. So, in true altruistic spirit, I’d like to do it for the children. I know that sounds cheesy, but they deserve better.
3) WoTC let the patent rights to D&D lapse, and now they have an open-source policy where similar games may be created either totally free from their intellectual rights, or with minimal reference to them.
4) It’s a fun thing to do.

I am telling you all this for a reason: I’d like your help. I think our pooled creativity will make it better than if I did it alone. Basically, I’ve constructed a skeleton, that’s somewhat a merger between a skill system (not wholly unlike Rob’s) and D&D. -I’ll send everyone a copy that’s interested. The mechanics are not in stone, but Ed and I like them, and I am not planning a major overhaul. -I need people to help me to create new spells, monsters and magic items. I am also open to suggestions. And, although Ed and I have been doing some play testing, much more testing needs to be done.

You can get the system details from the text. However, as there are only a few spells, monsters and magic items, most of the flavor is lacking. If you are on board, think gritty when it comes to flavor. Think of Rob’s Nahrboring campaign, -more demons and goblins than unicorns and faeries. Justin, I know you don’t know our gaming history, but you’re welcome to add as well.

My plan is to make it available as cheap as possible (0 profit) on a site like Lulu. And, don’t get me wrong, I am not trying to be completely original. I am just trying to be better where it matters. Due to the current condition of D&D property rights, this is possible. I want something the older gamers would love, and the newer gamers deserve.

I have no plan to profit from this. No money, no fame. I am going to use a pen name. You can to, if you wish. -It’s just for love of the game.

Also, I plan to commission Jeff Dee to do a cover illustration at the very least. Old school flavor.

I haven’t figured out how to organize this. I think I’ll just make a crappy blog to post updates (Like: “Rob is designing the undead”), and intermittently email updated versions. In the end, I am going to be making final editorial decisions, but I’ll try not to mess with your stuff too much.

If you want to contribute, let me know, anything is appreciated. If you don’t, that’s cool too.

I am sending this post via email too so everyone gets it. Let me know if you want a copy of the system so far.
