I muth dagree good Job no teh rapp'naaaaaaa dustim.

on a more serious note. I know it was mentioned some time ago, but a hp counter on the sidebar of the main page that could be easily edited by rob might help some of our players be more content and informed. Is it worth it? I'm fine how things are it just might remove some of the How many hp do people have kinds of questions.

Mad Rhymes there, Justin!

Allow me to be the first to say 'one of us'. And not in a zombie way! It fills my heart with joy that even though we've never met, it's good that someone geographically far is close in spirit.

"We're kind of like Tolkein, but with raps". True dat.

Oh - I've been all drinking, so if this is sappy, well . . . at least it's grammattically correct. Not that I'm naming any names.

Hey - and Chris is having connectivity problems - he is filled with sorrow that he can't post right now, and is striving to correct the issue. Is it his wireless card? Does he need a new motherboard? Is something else going on? We'll try to get him over here to catch up and post, but the new X-Box 360 in our house is sucking up a lot of our bandwidth.

The video game store clerk has the best minimum wage job in the world. I talked to him for half an hour today about games old and new - we looked at Oblivion on HDTV and oohed-ahhed, and when I said it was as important to me as when I first saw Myst, he looked me right in the eye, and said "I know exactly what you mean."

It was like a geeky beer commercial.

Froggy.

Ah, yes. Froggy. How could I have forgotten.

This blows my mind. So fucking cool.

Marivhon

his fucking name was froggy......thats one of the few times I almost lost it over the peanut gallery. You and steve just wouldn't shut the fuck up. It was either you and steve or you and ed. It kept coming up too. Froggy was always commenting on the happenings from then on. Froggy, fuck.

Nice picture though.

Froggy dammit, FROGGY

That ASCII art? What was that supposed to be?

And, doesn't 'ftw' mean 'fuck the world'? I'm not sure it's being used correctly here.

And, and, damn it Mark, it was FROGGY, not TOADY. Toady is sort of the Mario guy.

...

Scatman's World made my night though. Parts of this were in a mix I had about a year ago, then one night on the phone to my girlfriend, in lieu of nothing, I just hummed a couple seconds and said "Dee dum dum doh doh do" or something. Without hesitation, she was like "It's a scatman's world."

That's why I love her.

Orcy?

Hey Steve, did you mean Toady?

ASCII art?

Sheesh... I haven't seen that in a while. and I don't know about the rest of you, but it didn't display correctly for me.

rob... shed no tears because of our tom foolery.

Is that a bird?

Nice ASCII Steve. Is that a bird?

The picture you linked to was removed. If so, please labels those things NSFW if it's the case.

Also, in the BlogThis window, there is a HTML link option. Like this.

Hey Rob, I was thinking, next time you introduce an obvious enemy, maybe you could put his/her/its AC up there. Ex: You see Sinister Stan (AC5) across the room, licking a butcher knife.

Peanut gallery makes baby DM cry? I didn't know there was anything to dnd besides table talk. And loot.

I forgot there was a distinction between full plate, field plate, and plate. Plate is fine, just so long as it's covered in spikes. Can I get a ruling on being proficient/spec'd in spiked shield and claw-like glove?

Peanut gallery = ftw by the way. Ftw Rob. Don't you forget it.

All your tut

Tut, full plate? So, you're a Cavelier? Really, I don't care what class you are, but you gotta pick something. And starting with full plate, I'm gonna nix that too. You can have normal plate mail. Come on, you're 1st level there buddy. Plate mail and a halberd, check. Actually, you can have the normal plate mail and be whatever class you want, it's just that as an Illusionist or Druid, e.g., you won't be able to wear the armor and cast. There are rules here, ya know.

Hmm, not sure IDBT is a NWP for 2nd level chars to pick up. It's considerably more powerful than 'Heavy Drinking', 'Lute Playing', or 'Speak Spanish'. You probably have to go on a quest to learn it, or find a scroll or something.

For those of you playing along at home, and you too Moth, you might be wondering about such stuff as 'Marty puking', 'Interdimensional Basement traveling', and this new guy King Tut in the first place. Suffice to say these are all references to our old table top days in the 80s and early 90s. (King Tut's a real dude though.) Most of this is peanut gallery bid-ness, the stuff that makes a DM cry.

King Tut

AYBAB2U!

http://allyourbase.planettribes.gamespy.com/video1_view.shtml

King Tut

I DEFINITELY want to pick up IBT as my 2nd level talent. But does anyone know where all the blue plates are? I won't be able to go anywhere without them. Also, do I get the mechanic's jumpsuit with the name "Mike" on it? That would be critical. Somebody go clean up Marty's puke by the way.

Another dimension, another dimension...

Check this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EZR3D4OjJeE&search=scatman

If the scatman can do it, brother, so can you.

So I figured out what I want Tut to be like. He'll wear full plate covered in spikes with a spiked shield. His right hand will have a glove like Freddie's, with long spiky fingers. And he'll bite people, but only where sanitary. He'll basically just run into people and hit them with his shield or spiky glove.

Interdimensional Basement Traveling

You could always pick up IBT as a NWP when you train up to 2nd level. It comes in handy when youngsters are making far too much noise upstairs at the dining room table.

Marivhon

Uh, you can play whatever you want. If you don't want to bite your shield then Rob prolly won't make you do it. As for the astral travel it's kinda a high level skill to worry about how much sense it makes, as you will probably never use it.

7.18.2006

King Tut

Marivhon I can't figure out my own class now. I ripped out my eyes because of the background on that web page you linked.

I think I got berserker confused with barbarian. Barbarians suck, but berserkers do not. I think Tut would be a good berserker, except for this tidbit from the website:

"To achieve a berserk state, the berserker must spend one round working himself into a frenzy, biting his shield..."

I don't think KT is much of a shield biter. I think he'll just foam at the mouth and think very angry thoughts.

The spirit travel form seems really, really, stupid. It doesn't make any sense at all to me.

7.16.2006

Tut

Hey Steve, a paladin is fine with me. But that Lawful Good shit can be a hard play.

The Beserker class sounds pretty silly, but it might be up KT's alley. If you want to be a Beserker, I'll put up the necessary info on the Reference Page.

At any rate, you need to create your character sheet using your Blogger Profile.

7.15.2006

Moth?

Wow, looks like I missed a bunch of posts yesterday. The lady friend is in town this weekend only, so I'll be hanging out with her again tommorow, so probably no posts from me then. I put a couple rounds of combat in my last one though.

As for my character, Moth is a swordsman, magician, and rogue who really just wants to be a bard, but has a charisma of 4 and sub-par musical skills (he knows only one song and can play only one instrument). He currently owes no allegiance and gives no prayer to any deity. He's not so much anti-gods as much as he's just never heard of one he could really identify with. Neither Brogg nor Marivhon have told him about Grisbane, which I find amusing. I think Marivhon is more of a Zelba worshipper, though.

None of my 3.0 games have ever reached high enough levels to use haste on a mage for that double fireball goodness. It'll likely be a cold day in Gehenna before I buy 3.5 though. I don't think it's that bad, anyway, and I hear that 3.5 haste really really sucks. Plus they made gnomes bards... wtf.

I've got no perspective to offer on the bar, as I'm not yet that far along the road in life yet. Hope you succeed though.

Random Haiku is sweet.

Tut

I'll read up on all these posts in a few hrs. Thanks for all the encouragement :) I have to stop thinking about results and just think "what do I need to do right now in order to increase my chances of passing."

I was leaning towards paladin. We already have a fighter, I don't know anything about berzekers (and Tut doesn't really have anything against mages). Who ever heard of an unarmed paladin?

What's a party vote on what class would be most useful?

7.14.2006

Marivhon

check out the classes here. Barbarians can't wield magic cant' hang out with mages and well if you don't have an 18 dex their Ac sucks. Sure they have d12 hps but, nlah nlah. Check out class options here

http://www.mjyoung.net/dungeon/char/step002.html

Berzerker looks good. I think it would be funny/cool if King Tut was a class from 1ST edition oriental adventures.

How young were we?

It weirds me out that my son is as old as you were when you started gaming.

I think I was six. 'Winglor' in all his dwarven glory in some adventure that Will and Dave Wilson cooked up after reading the Hobbit, some dragon magazines, and watching Star Wars.

"yeah, and then you see this guy, who looks just greedo!"

"Can I have a blaster?"

"No. But don't worry, greedo only has a flail."

And I think I have Unearthed in a box in my garage. I'll try to dig it out tomorrow and read up on barbarians.

Ed's characters pretty consistently get shafted in my games for some reason

Tut, I think fighter would be fine. You also might consider barbarian or paladin, why not? Barbarian might be the best choice, as you'd get 1d12 for hp. Anyone have 1E Unearthed Arcana and can clue us in on barbarian stats?

7.13.2006

Random Haiku

Although it makes the HTML look even shittier, I added Random Haiku to the sidebar.

A little spice.

The party - like it's 1979

Dave, Fist of Odin is a cleric. Of Odin. Dedicated to his god by divine command.

Brogg is a fighter/cleric of Grisbane, god of half-breeds. He's also got some shit to deal with, but it seems to be more political than direct divine commands.

Cinder used to be a thief, but now he's not.

Mike this Zombie 1k was a thief, and then a zombie, and then off on adventures of his own.

Marivhon's a monk, and a little scary.

Renwick's a mage, but might be off on some sort of mystical journey.

Moth's a fighter/thief/mage, yes? Holding his own, fire stick, mad skilz to pay the bills.

Schmektor's a fighter, straight up, and he and Dave, Fist of Odin share a basic philosophy towards combat and getting things done.

King Tut's of uncertain lineage, it appears, but also appears to be fairly crazy. Dave, Fist of Odin can respect that.

Did I capture everyone?

And hey - Rob, the bit on the dust devil at the bar? Fucking magic. I laughed my ass off, and not in a LMFAO kind of lame way.

So my campagin is close to wrapping up - and has been for several months. We can't seem to covene all the players for the final adventure - the party did some shit, and then instead of continuing, decided to go after the big bad guy directly. It's really a campaign-ending move, and everyone knows it, and it'll be a good ending, one way or t'other... but, like I said, the principals have divergent work schedules. Sigh. Paul does not think my campaign was a success, but I'm very happy with it.

And, that's it.

Hi everyone!

It's cause of the bar...

Who all remembers that one? Slath was retarded, I think. Maybe Fester feebleminded him. I think it was cause of the bar.

Anyway, Steve, you can count on me to raise a glass with you whether you pass or fail. As for what Rob said, I totally agree. Failure sorts out the weak-willed. Fear of failure sorts out the complete hoses. Passing the first time doesn't impress me as much as passing the second. The second shows conviction.

Still, I think you know this. You've been knocked down, but you got up again. They're never gonna keep you down. You've been knocked down, but you got up again. They're never gonna keep you down. You've been knocked down, but you got up again. They're never gonna keep you down. -Am I right, Johnny Boy?

Anyway, be a fighter dude. I think it suits King Tut's MO. Also, there is specialization. You get 4 weapon profs at first level. 1 get's you prof. Another gets you spec. (+1,+2), the third gets you double spec. (+3,+3). Don't forget that 3/2 attack.

Drinking wine from a bottle at the moment. Hooah.

When a monk grapples, he gets to do automatic damage and the opponent loses the round, and it can happen round after round

So the +20 to hit is for one single roll that has to come next round. So it's not totally unreasonable. Actually, in five years of 3rd edition, I've only seen it cast once. Usually it's a better idea just to let the fighter roll on their own and use your mage spell for magic missile, I guess. But yeah, 3rd ed Haste was out of control, hence 3.5 edition. Monks are now broken in 3.5 edition due to 'grappling', which is a different story.

By the way Steve, here on the table talk page you don't gotta sign your name in the post title if you don't want.

As for the Bar, good luck my friend. I thought taking the bar was all about failure, so I wouldn't worry about it more than necessary to motivate you. Where I'm from, failure is sort of a way of life. I've failed at everything I've tried at and applied for, at least the first time. Being where I am, obviously the success has come at some point, but it takes effort. I wear failure as sort of a badge of courage, as honestly, I'm skeptical of people who succeed too easily, too often. They obviously haven't suffered enough to care, to have their faith tested so to speak.

King Tut

I tried sending an email to (my) firstnamelastname at gmail dot com. It got bounced.

I'm nervous about the bar. It's really hard and I didn't do as well in my practice essays as I had hoped. I'm doing ok on the multistate and state multiple choice portions, not great but ok. The thing I'm most nervous about is telling people I failed if I fail. It will just seem so embarrassing cause people will be like "nice job, you wasted 3 yrs of your life." Fear is a good motivator though, and I could always retake it.

Lay the Beat Down

Schmektor = fighter.

I too am less than religious [in game]. I am more interested in picking up fame and fortune as an adventurer. Schmektor is agnostic. Obviously all of these gods and their clerics have powers, and I appreciate them... I just haven't made any commitments either way.

DAMN Steve! The Bar exam? That is fantastic. Its been to long - shoot me an email at (my) firstnamelastname at gmail dot com.

King Tut

+20 to hit? wtf? that haste is really sick too...so i could've double slay living randolph had i been hasted. peace out randolph.

I think plain old fighter might be better for Tut, not sure tho. Isn't Marivhon already a monk? I read something about him stunning someone, I think that's a monk thing. Tut isn't into devotion or body-as-a-temple, he's just straight up pissed. What about beserker? does that exist? Can paladins fight unarmed?

If there's already a monk, Tut should be something else. Can you give me a quick idea of what the party is? I have the bar exam in 2 weeks so I can't read all the stories. I gather that brogg is a cleric, marivhon is a monk, not sure about the rest.

I have no clue at all what 1st edition is. I know that there are still classes, and apparently you can multi in 1st. Beyond that I'm lost... no specialization I'm guessing?

His name

His name was Randolph. Fucking Randolph.

7.12.2006

Go ahead put my rhymes on trial

So DiD here is straight up 1st edition. But the table top game I'm running it's 3.5 edition. Mages there have quite a few buff spells; haste, stat boosting (+4 to STR, DEX, and CON), True Strike (which gives you a +20 to hit on your next attack roll)... it's kinda sick. Should be some fun combats. 3rd edition Haste was super crazy; 3rd level spell that let a mage drop two spells per round. As in, "I'll cast two 10d6 fireballs this round."

Sigh. What was that guy's name anyway? The guy who survived his Slay Living. That's what I get for rolling dice out in the open. It's my policy nowadays though, no screen, full disclosure of dice rolls.

A monk it is, Tut. En garde.

7.11.2006

King Tut

I didn't know mages have buff spells. I thought that was cleric land. Don't mages just magic missile and identify? I remember I tried to pawn off some retarded spell where I could imbue shuriken with power and throw them or something. What a dumb spell.

Poor Jimmy Woo.

Can I get 1 thing confirmed--If npc's in this campaign get hit with Slay Living and roll a 1, will they clutch their chest, mysteriously fall out a window, and get teleported into some weird castle where they sip wine and are guarded by 30 full plate guards? Moreover, can I train that skill as a monk? Cause that's hot. Real hot.

I'll be a monk. My style is called "Intergalactic Beatstick." Represent yo. I channel my powers from beyond, from a universe that used to be. The ancient Egyptians didn't die in those dumb pyramids. They built huge space-travelling robots out of tin foil and flew off into another galaxy. My focusing mantra is "Intergalactic Planetary Planetary Intergalactic." If you didn't know, now you know.

7.10.2006

No boss no!

Actually the table top 3 mages game was unbelieveably fun. I love no-clerics groups. At the table we're all jaded gamers, so trying something sort of new was also nice. Combat is crazy, especially given that the three mages are 'support magic' type. Mainly they just are going to buff up the fighter and she'll butcher the opposition as they hide.

The game itself is starting out slow but I plan to take it to some weird places in the next few sessions; will update coarsely as I can.

...

Jimmy Wu Superstar. My GOD that was awesome. The first Narbohring campaign, yo.

Poor, poor, poor Gadianheim...indeed

I have already spent a few rounds knocked out... but these folks have been good enough to bandage me in my hour of need.

Great to have you on board Tut. It's been too long.

Rob- sounds like a great tabletop. Color me green with envy.

7.09.2006

King Tut

I tried stuff like Warcraft, etc. but it's not really the same. I miss the friends and "peanut gallery." I think this whole idea is really cool. Mark and I kinda did something similar, we would play games of Magic via text msgs. You know like "Swamp, Zombie CAnnibal, go bitch." But this is a lot more impressive. I had read a little bit about blogging but I didn't know it was so easy or widespread. I'll try to read up on the campaign as it's progressed.

The new group seems iffy--3 mages and a tank? What's the new campaign like? You always came up with the best stuff. I hope Stamps remembers that Gaddianheim comment, when I heard he was gaming again that was the first thing I thought of. "Poor poor poor Gaddianheim."

Does Chris play? Johnny Woo Superstar?

Peanut gallery time

Well let's all give a big old DiD welcome to King Tut, aka Steve, aka the guy I've been gaming with for as long as we both could use written communication. No shit, I was 5, Steve was 4, fuckin' Keep on the Borderlands man. Fuckin' Dragon magazine featured modules, man.

Steve, you'll figure it all out here, but the DiD site is for in-game, this blog is for out-of-game and random crap. To avoid confusion, I'll call the two Steves by their guys' names, i.e. Schmektor and Tut.

...

Just ran my first game in three years. Tons of fun. There are four PCs: three 1st level wizards and a 1st level fighter. They're the local militia in a sleepy village, and then some weird stuff begins to happen. Their first adventure (preludes are all taken care of) is going to be to arrest a pirate who comes into town. So, so good.

7.08.2006

Marivhon

I only fucked with the Lock after moth. Figured he could find something bad and I might be able to open it.....

I was taken aback by his bravado, confronting golden locks.

New char

Cool dude I rolled 3d6 straight down and got 5 18's and a 17. I had Big Ben roll them for me. 18/00 for str btw.

Remember the wood elf who got killed by a snake when he was sleeping in a tree while soloing? That sucked.

I want to make King Tut. He'll have unarmed spec'd but will carry halberds that are (obviously) never used. He will attack with claw claw bite (I assume the bite will do minimum dmg...unless the party has a pair of +2 dentures anywhere? That would help on the "to hit" roll also.).

Ok I rerolled and I got (if we go str8 down)
Str: 10
Int: 11
Wis: 9
Dex: 11
Con: 9
Cha: 8

The numbers are in order, I think I remember the attribute order. This character was an accountant in ancient Egypt but he did the pharoes taxes wrong, so he was cursed to slumber for X years and has just reawakened. Upon learning that all of his family and friends are dead (and that the tax code has changed ALOT) he is really pissed off. Thus he is too furious to use his halberds, though he cannot bear to part with them since they remind him of home.

So does the party need anymore classes? He could multi into priest or something. Though the xp hit sucks.

Another new PC?!

Hey all, Steve S, (the other Steve S.) is interested in getting on board.

Justin, Steve is one of our old tabletop pals. -He's best known for outrageously maximized characters such as his Female Drow Cleric/Fighter. She really kicked ass. Two double-spec shortswords. Ouch. Come to think of it, her name was Cinder too..

Anyway, I say we welcome him aboard. I'll get him on TableTalk now.

Steve, just so you know, we rolled these characters 3d6 straight down. Best of luck.

7.06.2006

Rough, but....

I am sure if Cinder wanted to play again Rob would be willing to work somthing out. At least I think he would. And I would fully support a "brothers-in-arms" movement to get Cinder (or some other character) re-equipped. I would love to have Cinder get back online.

Kinda rough...

Hey, just my 2 cents, but I am not so cool with what happened to Cinder. I mean, couldn't we have just let him chill at Shady Orchards?

I think it was kinda rough.

Dave, Fist of Odin, with a hit point check

One more thing - Rob, did I roll for hit points for the new level? My character sheet shows 39 for 6th level. Let me know if I need to re-roll, because I forgot what I got before. A three, I think, which gives me 6 more hp (3+1 for CN +2 for Special training)...

And note that my AC is now 0, from the +1 Dwarven shield, which has been defaced to become a shield with a raven on it. You know, props to my peeps.

7.05.2006

Dave, Fist of Odin, with some questions

Hey all,

First off - Rob, can I take 'better at mace' as a weapon prof? Specialization, or something? Or is that only for fighters?

Second - I'm updating my character sheet tonight. But if plans need different spells - like a couple of silences, or some PFEs - it's open to change. The formatting of blogger sometimes loses stuff on there, so I might have more than appears.

Third - it seems like as we level I'm getting less and less effective in combat (except to keep soaking, which is fine). Especially compared to the fighters, with multiple attacks. This might just be because I've been playing 3rd edition so much, where the damage dealt in combats keeps going up. This isn't a question, or a complaint - just an observation: I've been doing a d6+3 damage when I hit for several levels. Is that just the way of it? Maybe I should start focusing more on spellcasting. I do love summoning bears!

Rob, I want another point of wisdom. How can I make that happen?

That's it.

Marivhon

many of my posts in the future will probably be "from Dave". He's often playing Civ 4 on my computer so it's just easier to use his old mac laptop.

Okay

Alright, sounds like we're all cool here. Just as long as people keep posting and keep it in-game, we're good. Although it's odd that one of Marivhon's table talk posts below comes from Dave?

Anyway, I'm out of commission until Friday night. I'll post then on the main page and push things along.

7.04.2006

Southern Utah is H O T

Apologies for my lack of posts. I took the fam down south for a little vacation and I had no online access. So yeah, It was an abnormally cool 105 all weekend. yeah... we spent the whole time in the AC or in the pool.

Sounds like we have this "Cinder's Stuff" thing worked out. Other than the community benefit of paying for the TiVo-XBOX system... we are each 200GP up, no?

Marivhon

It's totally just part of the game. I don't let shit that happens in character affect me personally. I've played this game way too long for that to still happen. My guy is a Lawful Evil idiot. He has a 5 Wisdom. I don't ever want you to think it's personal. It's not. As for the tone, I don't think Marivhon ever really raises his voice. He has a 4 con. He isn't the nicest guy, but he'll try and keep you safe. Just put yourself in my shoes (no pun intended) and see what you would have done if the new guy picked up more magic then you had. blah blah blah. I'm just glad you post.

Just to clarify...

Sorry if I offended anyone with my post about Cinder's stuff... I explained my reasoning in the main blog, if anyone still wants to talk about it, feel free to post it here or PM me (if blogger has that, I dunno).

I'm new, so I kind of understand if people think I'm overstepping my bounds there, but I want to make it clear that I'm a reasonable guy who isn't going to freak out or be a bitch if you've got a different idea on how things ought to be divvied up.

Marivhon/Paul, I really couldn't tell just how harsh your post was intended to be, out of character-wise. Either way, seemed like a lot of unessecary animosity, but if it's just part of the game, that's cool, let's play on.

Marivhon

I'm chill, I just didn't think Moth should get to pick through Cinders stuff, again.

I didn't know the Roos were shoes. Cinder had 2 pairs of shoes then, I don't know how he was wearing them both but he was. Shoes that gave a +1 on Dex and plus 2 movement. I guess he just slung the Roos over his shoulder. Fuck it. OK well, I post I get yelled at. We keep and We sell were me saying what I thought we should do. We is the party. You tell us Greyhelm is a deathtrap, and then get mad at me for trying to do something about it and get other peoples feedback, maybe some healing. Sweet. Yeah that's about all I have to say right now. Oh, Moth I hope my post wasn't as big a deal to you as it seems to have been for Rob.

Downtime

I'll be travelling from the 5th to the 7th and out of internet contact.

Oh, and...

Via the indomitable metafilter:

http://www.hoodyhoo.com/kodt.htm

KoDT movies.

"Damn dude, you were robbed!" (Pun not lost on yours truly.)

Implore

First off, summoning a 'Fist of Odin' is a 6th level spell, so you'll be able to cast it a long time from now, when you're 11th level. To put things in perspective, you need a grant total of 675,000 xp to get to 11th. You have a little over 60,000 right now. That's right, you're about 10% of the total way to 11th level. Sorry to dampen the mood.

Anyway, Abjure is a great spell, one of the underutilized gems of Unearthed Arcana. Almost broken. Simply put, Abjure attempts to banish an outer planes creature (demon, devil, angel, modron, etc) back to the plane of origin. It's a contested saving throw or something. But that's not what is so hot about it.

Abjure is reversable. The reversal, Implore, brings a creature from the outer plane of the Cleric's alignment. It's out of your control, and I'm not sure if it's an automatic summon, but shit dude. You're essentially casting a 7th circle spell, Gate, as a 4th circle. Because who the fuck cares if the demon is out of your control when there's a ton of other guys to fight hanging around? For as long as I ran 1E games, all NPC priests ever took for their 4th circle spells were Cure Serious and Implores. Sometimes the reversal of Neutralize Poison, Cause Poison, but rarely because 'save or die' magic is boring.

Abjure?

Hey all - Mark, thanks for getting the new spells up. I am most excited about summoning Zangief to aid our struggles - but in two levels, I can bring in ANOTHER FIST OF ODIN. Oh My God. Excuse me for a moment, because I just wet myself with pleasure.

Ummm . . . you know, because I spilled my beer. Yeah.

Anyway. I remember what most of the 4th level spells do, except 'abjure'. Anyone?

Dave, Fist of Odin

Hi all,

So, I'm back from Korea. It was great - I did some good research, met some new colleagues (and made a couple of new friends), and ate live octopus.

That's right - it was still wriggling, and attached its suckers to the inside of my mouth. But it was really, really tasty!

So I live in Portland with Paul - I mean Marivhon - and I'm blood relations to one of the other people doing this. I'm getting a PhD in Mathematics Education, which is kind of my fourth career . . . but, it brought me to Seoul, so that's something. I . . . . um, well, I play Dave, Fist of Odin, who is becoming more and more like who I am in life, which worries me. And I drive a car named Boomer.

Hi Steve! Good to hear from you! And hello Moth - I'm sorry, but I don't know that we've been introduced, either in game or out. I'll say hello in game after I get caught up enough to post. My real name is Dave, although I am not currently a Fist of Odin. People in Korea, however, called me 'Dave', so take your pick.

That's it. Are we in trouble? I'm going over to the main site now to see if there's clobbering to do.

And hey Rob - Did I roll new hit points for levelling? I forget. How many XP to 8th level? Only like 400, right? I believe my NWP was 'negotiating'. I'll update my character sheet in the next couple of days.

Dave, Fist of Odin likes clobbering, drinking, summoning feisty shit, and talking to folks, in pretty much that order; but the four things I like really all kind of blur together. I also have a suit of armor that talks to me in my head, which is really quite nice because we agree on many, many things. 'Armouran - should I clobber these guys?' 'Well Dave, Fist of Odin, I think a better question is which guy needs clobbering the most?'

Yup.

6.30.2006

Marivhon

let's not get all lost here guys. Let's either get through Vrill's door or find him in Greyhelm. If we can't get the door open in the next 2 days I'm going to Greyhelm to find Vrill. I think he might have locked up his daughter behind the door, we need to get her too.

6.28.2006

Blogger?

Blogger doesn't recognize 'Blogger'.

That is rich.

Xorn unrecognized

Also flagged by blogger spellchecker:

...

Actually, if you press the 'Next Blog' button in the upper right, you might observe that it's a little absurd for blogger to have a spellcheck feature at all.

I find myself wondering that too.

Yeah is Ed ok, or least still Ed? Or is Ed now Melinda, or something, and as such can't post to D&D blogs anymore? It's because of Mel's new tran-sgender friends isn't it? Fuck it's so weird when people change their sex and assume the gender roles that are the societal norm for that sex. Eh, good luck with your new vagina Ed. P.S. I think it's funny that Blogger's spell check doesn't recognize the word "blog".

6.27.2006

I want to be a Lord.

Lord Kinross, that name kicks ass. That's a sweet NPC name. Thanks for the recommendation, I'll check it out.

The book I am reading is so dry, it's almost just a timeline. I guess it will be a good primer to reading some more Ottoman history.

Gao Qi and I were at the MET in New York a couple of years ago, and they had a large collection of Ottoman stuff. I really wish I would have had a clue at the time.

6.26.2006

Schmektor on AIM

hmmm.... I wonder why no one else has ever registered that name before... well, it's mine now.

My place of employment also blocks several things on the web... AIM being one of them. So if we were to have an online session, for me it would have to be in the evenings or on the weekend. I am surprised access to blogger has lasted as long as it has... and gabbly behaved REALLY strangely when I tried it from work. Maybe I should be just working at work...

I think the thing that worries me about an online session would be the Chaos. We should probably discuss and lay down some basic ground rules for an online session. I could see it getting REALLY crazy and out of hand if it were free-for-all.

Thoughts?

Hey Brogg... is Ed okay?

Gabbly RSS

Hey just a heads up.

Folks can subscribe to the Gabbly RSS and read the entire transcript. I tried on Bloglines.com and could read everything that was typed thus far.

Just in case you wanted to keep some things off the radar.

I like long walks on the beach...

I'll drop some books and info:

I do neuroscience research in Detroit. I'm reading a book called "Osman's Dream" about the Ottoman Empire. I tried to get a book on Ataturk, but found this instead. -Chris and I are suckers for history or historical biography books.

My undergrad was in physics, and I love the subject, but I've read too many books like "A Brief History of Time".

I've been reading the New Yorker lately.

Here are three good books:

"Godel, Escher, Bach": Hofstadter
"Moby Dick": Melville
"War and Peace": Tolstoy

For hobbies, I paint, write, and play Magic with Ed.

As for the Gabber thing, my work blocks it, so it will only be a go when I am at home. However, I am going to need a heads-up.

Time and Chat

I am pretty sure the time zone breaks down as follows:

Brogg & Cinder are Eastern time. I am pretty sure the blog is Eastern time as well.

I [Schmektor] am in Mountain time, (-2 hours)

Rob, Marivhon, Renwick, and Dave, Fist of Odin are all Pacific (-3 hours).

Scratch Yahoo... AIM seems that it would be our best bet. If you're up to it, we could do the whole thing in AIM. I have done some test runs with some friends of mine. I am able to have several people chatting on macs and windows. I can log the conversation and then post it later.

Anyone other ideas?

I'm checking out some other options as well.

Gabblydegook

Gabbly is giving me trouble at the moment, and upgrading my version of Firefox may not be an option. I'll keep trying some stuff, see if I can get it working. I'd be cool with going to the arena, but I also wouldn't mind just sticking to the blog. What's the time zone difference between myself and the majority of the players, anyhow? 2 hours? 3?

Oh, and I agree with Schmektor, no problem with getting knocked out. I've played in far too many AD&D campaigns where getting killed or KO'd simply didn't happen. Boring as hell.

Rob, any particular translation of DQ you'd recommend? I currently have one checked out that seemed less poetic but more readily readable than the others. I've got nothing but time, but I'd like to get to read lots of things, and some of the stuff I've read recently has slowed me way down (I'm beginning to remember why I didn't finish Paradise Lost at school...)

Gabbly

Okay, here's a chat thing.

Instead of typing in:

http://www.descentintodepths.blogspot.com/

type in:

http://www.gabbly.com/http://www.descentintodepths.blogspot.com

Opens the webpage like normal, but also has a little chat window that pops up. Unfortunately, there's no security about names, so anyone can pick any name and change it at any time, making DMing only feasible by the PCs good graces.

That solves the easiest of the three technical problems about chatting: "how do we do it?"

The two other problems are harder:
2) How do we save a log of the chat and post it in a readable fashion to the blog? Anything that happens on chat is part of the game and should be logged.
3) How do we all congregate, or at least get a quorum? Maybe after the Knight battle, you guys should go to the Arena of Kyuss, for a trial run in a simple combat. We'll pick a date and time and see what happens.

6.25.2006

Low Level Blues

Rob, don't worry about knocking us out... it's par for the course as a low level adventurers. And hell, you didn't force me into the cage with chainsaw dude. Some day my HP and ability to do damage just might catch up with my mouth. Until that day I plan on diving into combat, cleaver in hand... and being dragged out and bandaged within a round or two. And crazy mad props to my brothers in arms for bandaging my bloody stumps and pulling me out of there.

More about books

Chris, good to hear about the new job. You recommend Ivanhoe, huh? I'll have to take a look.

Other books. I loved Don Quixote. In case you don't know, it's about a guy who reads too many fantasy novels and decides to go off and be an adventurer. There are fucking hilarious parts I only aspire to here on DiD, it's basically an epic adventure gone horribly, horribly wrong, mainly because it's in the real world, where there aren't damsels in distress, monsters, wizards, etc.

Have you read A Game of Thrones? I picked it up and got 20 pages into it, put it down because the whole 7-wolves-for-7-heirs thing was fucking cheesy. "We found six. But then we found a scrappy white albino pup! Who will take care of such a sickly yet dangerous beast?"
"I will," says the littlest knight. The monks nodded gravely to each other... was this an omen? A cold wind blew.

Or something. But if anyone can recommend it, I'll try it again.

We could probably all talk books for a while, so I'll keep a list of recommendations short:
Pale Fire, Vladimir Nabokov
The Prestige, Christopher Priest
Foucault's Pendulum, Umberto Eco

All amazing, unique books... the first two are rather short.

...

As for me, well you sorta know my story. I try to stay as anonymous here as possible though. "Behind the DM screen" so to speak.

My Story

I attend a liberal arts college in Virginia. I haven't declared my major yet, but my intended concentration is Psychology. Currently out for summer break, I haven't been able to find employment yet, but not for lack of trying. My hobbies are basically whatever creative endeavor grabs me at the moment, but I'm a fan of writing, RPGs, and bike-riding. As for pets, I'm a cat person. As for books, well, I've had a lot of free time recently, so I've been reading a bunch of them. I finally finished Thus Spoke Zarathustra a few days ago, and I enjoyed what I understood. Then I read The Green Mile. Wow, just wow. That book completely blew me away. Today I got back on track reading Paradise Lost, which I was reading and loving back at college, but stopped for lack of time and need to return it so I could check out other books I needed for a research paper. I've been trying to read more "good" books recently, to attone for reading almost nothing but fantasy novels for a number of years. If anyone here has recommendations for stuff to read of absolutely any sort though, I'd like to hear them.

I guess I've been in kind of a funk recently too, though not really job related. I'm hoping that'll all clear up once I can get back to school.

New Outllook

Glad to hear you got out of the funk Chris. Nothing like a bad job to leave residual negativity in your life. The last time I saw you I was doing the computer thing. At the moment I am working for State Farm of all places... selling insurance [State Farm = Da Funk]. Needless to say I am out looking for somthing new.

The wife and I have three kids now. We moved from Colorado to Utah for the current job. Utah is.... well... utah. We'll see where we end up with the new job. I am looking back in the tech sector, the film business, and as always, toying with the idea of grad school. We'll see where the wind blows.

5-7-5 pleasures.

Random Haiku has really been kicking out some gems:

Relentless in it's motion
I'm a Zen Master

May I touch your boob?
One day you'll see the Heavens
It gets me going

...

Heh.

Bold move, Steve. -We'll reincarnate you at the very least.

And...

how to knock yourself unconsious

Is there anything funnier than the search phrases that bring people to DiD?

smartass

I knew some one was going to crack a KOA campground joke when I asked the question... figures it would be Dr. K.

6.22.2006

Ew.

That wasn't yogurt
Nestled in mountain forest
A double bed please

Today's random haiku.

Steve, the KoA has hundreds of locations across America, providing fun, safe campgounds at a reasonable price. They have RV plots too.

The KoA are also extra-dimensional Knights who have invaded the Prime Material Plane for some unknown reason. The Summary Page will tell you as much as we know.

I am thinking a realtime session is going to be hella hard to organize.

Knights of Armek?

Can some one give me the nickel version of who the Knights of Armek are, and why we are trying to catch one in the tart?

sorry... I have been reading back and trying to figure out all of the history... but it is a bit foggy.

And also, is anyone else interested having an online session? I'll work on the details if there is any interest. Let me know if you are running mac, windows, linux, or somthing else so I can get somthing going. or just tell me to piss off and I'll leave the idea behind.

time to pack up the home pc

ok guys I'm moving this weekend and my Dsl is going down, so I might be posting intermittantly. I can still post from work on saturday or if I go there in the mean time. Well the moral is good luck, I should be around enough to help if things are bad.

6.21.2006

Vrill's Strategem perhaps?

uh maybe, they did. It could have been Vrill trying to cause some player DM tension. Ignore it Rob, he's so juvenile. Don't stoop to his level.

Okay

Okay, there's no way that FOUR people used the search phrase:

"Marivhon attacks that pussy rob"

to come to our site.

No fucking way.

6.20.2006

Important: The future of pop music!!!! READ HEER!!!

So after Steve asked about ScrapsAhoy, I went back and read the Feb06 Table Talk archives. Some interesting stuff. Like how Brittany Spears was going to revitalize poop music. Er, pop music, sorry, that really was an unintentional typo.

Anyway, now here it is, months later, and what? Nothing. Same old crap. But maybe BS isn't the salvation we need. Maybe it's really Paris Hilton. I heard she wants to cover Gnarls Barkley's 'Crazy'. Her cover could just be the perfect pop song of all time.

Awaiting with bated breath, yours truly,
Rob the DM.

...

By the way, talking about random blogs, here's a gem:
http://phaedrus-uk.blogspot.com/

It's your classic day-in-the-life kinda blog, with typical bizarre variety in the posts. One day it's about what he does for his computer job. The next day he fucks a prostitute in the ass. Day after that? More bitching about personal problems at work. Sort of "The Stranger" in play-by-play, or maybe an awkward Mike Leigh movie. From the banal to the... well, I think you know where I'm going with that one. Cheers.

ScrapsAhoy

ScrapsAhoy. I don't even remember where this came from. I think it might have been from clicking the 'Go to a random blog' button at the top right corner too much. I think we just all loved the name and the... the earnest-ness of the site. Maybe I'm reading to much into it, but maybe something there resonated with us gamers... you know, the whole quasi-social aspect of sitting around, working on a project that's kinda lame and very personal, rolling dice or pasting doilies, arguing with the DM or comparing wallpaper sample patterns. Two sides of the same coin, mayhaps.

Actually if you look through the archives, go to Feb 06 and you'll find where Ed turned us onto it. During a time when we were all enamoured of everyone's awesome blogs out there.

I'm Windows. Like I said, I'm not gonna be the one to do it, but if someone else can make it easy for all of us to log on at the same time, same website, go for it, let's give it a try. I've got a few hrs free here and there I guess.

Problem Solved

Thanks for the nod Paul. Blogger was trying to hold me under their oppressive thumb... but alas, I have broken free. Thanks for the "re-invite" Mark. I don't know which part of the process was feebing the sweed, but its done. Glad to be here.

I like the idea of an actual online session. I think gmail chat would work fine, or even just open a chat room at yahoo or somthing. There are also several apps we could use to do an audio session. Is everyone in windoze? or are there any mac users in the crew? any linux kids?

BTW, what's with the ScrapsAhoy link on the main page?

I don't thin Schmektor can post to didTT

no really we should fix that.

6.18.2006

Nuclear blast.

I hadn't updated Random Haiku for some time. However, I got this beauty today:

I'm a Zen Master
Like a ninja in the dark
A nuclear blast

-So fucking awesome.

Steve, send me an alternate email. We can try that.

BTW, if you have any 5 or 7 syllable phrases to add to the mix, hook me up.

And, I also updated the Reference Page a bit. Dave, your 4th level spells are up. I still can't figure out why the Reference Page gets wacky with Firefox. Unfortunately, DiD looks better with IE...

Oh yeah, fighter specialization info is up there too, Justin. -I don't know if you'll be needing it yet.

6.17.2006

Not everyone thinks we're completely LAME

Hey, this guy gave us 'blog of the day', for my post about how there should be lots of Robs posting on the internet. Scroll down after the nice tree picture.

http://www.crabapplelane.net/

More google searches

I love how searching for 'jump motherfucker jump motherfucker jump' led someone to our modest website.

Hey you, whoever it is:
Now you're just a bunch of jumping motherfuckers.

Cue the beats.

...

And if you haven't yet seen the Gnarls Barkley/Star Wars/YouTube thing yet, then you aren't very good at using the 'Internet', now, are you?

Welcome to our world of joy

Hey Justin, welcome to the... uh, welcome to the blog.

Fighter-mage-thief is a bold choice. Yeah, don't worry about the stat requirements. Marivhon totally broke those, and there's no going back now. As for starting spells, it's straight outta 1E DMG. You get a spellbook with Read Magic, Detect Magic, and roll 1d8 three times, once for an offensive spell, once for defensive, and once for misc. You can take care of that here or over on the normal DiD page.

The way mage spells work is this: being first level, you get to memorize one spell out of your book each day, but if you have a high IQ, you get bonus spells just like a cleric would (so if your IQ is 15, you get to memorize 3 first circle spells each day). You can take the same spell three times if you wish, any combination will do.

Each time you level, pick two spells, and roll to learn them based off the IQ table. Even if you don't make it, you effectively get a 'scroll' of this spell, and you can try to learn it next level. You can learn extra spells from other guys' spellbooks or by trading, e.g., with Renwick. Trading is basically a 1-for-1 basis, and you each get one roll to learn the spell. You can trade as many spells as you want though.

If it sounds complicated, don't sweat it, it'll get worked out. Anyway, I'll add you to the main game now. Good luck!

Queries

Got most of the stuff done on my character sheet. I went with F/MU/Th over the standard bard, so I figure I'll just learn to play the lute or something once I get a(n) NWP. He doesn't totally suck, but leveling is going to be slow going with 3 classes. And he has terribly low charisma, so any sort of talking his way out of anything is right out. Kinda odd for a bard wannabe, but I figure the low-personality misfit thing goes with a guy named "Moth" pretty well anyhow.

A few quick questions for the DM:

Theoretically my 4 in charisma limits me to being an assassin. It shouldn't be hard to rework the character if you decide to go with that call.

If I get to keep my mage powers, how do you want me to determine starting spells?

Thanks

Hey Justin.

I used 3d6 straight down for my character and he sucks. I made him a half-elven monk even though that shouldn't be allowed because of his race and stats. So I think it's a play what you want as long as he sucks kind of thing. Playing a bard is perfect in that sense. They have to advance as so many things so many levels before they actually get to be a bard. 5 levels of fighter minimum and 5 of thief minimum. You should go to Level 7 as a fighter so you can get 2 attacks with your specialized weapon, so you would be 12th level before you become a bard and get 1 lowsy first level druid spell. Whatever, just don't play a gnome or a halfling cause they suck, and we'll have to beat you with a stick. Hell play a bard and we might even have more rap battles. We don't backstab the party that is true. We even cart our less than active players around and change their diapers. We leave the fucking us over to Rob. He does it so well.

Well thats all, Marivhon the "Monk".

ps hey Mark isn't the Mug gonna get kinda crowded?

6.16.2006

Greetings

Hey,

Glad to meet you all! My name is Justin and I'm a college student from Virginia. I've been reading your blog for a while now, ever since someone linked to it on the rpg.net. Anyhow, I checked out the reference page, thought the whole thing looked interesting, especially with the anachronisms, humor, blogs for important npcs, etc., so I started reading from the beginning and eventually caught up with the storyline. DiD has been somewhat like an extremely humorous fantasy novel for me, and I'm quite enthusiastic to take part in its future writing.

About my character, his name is Moth, and I'm going to go with half-elf for race, and I'm thinking either Bard (if I can figure out exactly how the 1e bard works) or Fighter/Magic-User/Thief for class. As for my experiences/thoughts on gaming, I've been playing D&D in small campaigns since high school, and got to start a longer ongoing game in college. I've DMed mostly, almost always in custom worlds. I started off playing 2nd edition, but the bulk of my experience has been with 3rd edition. I have a small collection of 1st edition books, though, so I'm familiar with what's going on here. I've always been pretty laid back about gaming, and while I usually keep my milieu mostly serious, I think humor is an important part of the game.

Well that's about all I can think of to say at the moment. I'll get to work on my character sheet. I'm just going to assume that we're using the 4d6 drop lowest method for stat generation and that Bards are allowed, if I'm incorrect just let me know. Look forward to gaming with you all! Oh, and Rob, now worries about my character backstabbing the party. I've dealt with enough players like that. Ech.

6.15.2006

Marivhon

yeah that jug fucker probably thinks that the Potion Guild site is the tits or something.

Schmektor:

BTW Schmektor, please title your main page posts with your name only (as above). We reserve fancy titles for Rob only to avoid confusion.

Die-curious?

That is awesome. I have to put a link to Awful Blogs on our link page.

I thanked him, but I don't know if he'll allow the comment.

You know, I've always thought that D&D bashers were kind of like homophobes. Pretzl's disclaimer about role playing: "I played a role playing game once in a friend’s basement, but I sucked." could just as easily serve as a bicurious confessional.

Not that being gay is bad, Pretzl. What's bad is denying yourself who you really are.

Don't get me wrong, but I think you are repressing some feelings about gaming there. C'mon, give me a hug buddy. Here, pick up the d20... yeah, we'll take it slow.

Player haters

Check it out:

Plus, I think we've been deleted from wikipedia.

+1

Thanks guys, always nice to hear. So Steve Stamps should be a go, he's accepted the invitation and should be posting any day now. Things should get back on track, more or less.

Looks like Steve has officially joined us, and entered combat...

Private party.

Yeah, hell of a job, Rob.

I've been writing grants. That has been a drain, but I'd like to think that I've put in my fair share, nonetheless.

In all honesty, Hello Airport was kind of a mental drain. I can only keep so much straight on this blog, and HA was pushing it to the limit. I felt all fuzzy and helpless.

Not to say that I want it to be all "falling in giant's caves", but something in between.

Let's keep it closed to the public, eh? Steve, yeah that's cool, but Jeremy Renaldo from Iowa? Man, fuck Jeremy. Where was he when we were fighting the Crystal Mage?

6.13.2006

Open to the world?

Hey all,

So yeah, I've been off-line for awhile. But opening DiD up to the world? Really? I mean, Steve Stamps - cool. But some randoms from the fucked-up internet? I just dunno. Would that make it more fun?

Hmmm. I say, make it on a case-by-case basis, and I'd really rather not have people on here that I've never met. But that's my $0.02.

Oh - and really, it'd be fun playing with Steve! I'm down with that.

Its been a while

Hey all,

Sorry for not posting in the last few weeks - my life got crazy busy.

As Paul pointed out - "Too busy to post?" Well, yeah. Finals, two classes to prep for, too many papers to write, defense, beating up Paul's cat - it's been hectic.

Sigh. I was feeling like I was just kinda tagging along before my hiatus, not really much to say, but that's more about me and what's going on here than the adventure. Hello Airport sounded like a blast, and I wish I'd poked around a bit more, but . . . I dunno. I guess I went down to 'critical-only tasks' mode.

But now I'm back! I'm-a gonna catch up on what I missed, and maybe jack a guy in the face, and off we go.

And hey - Rob - you're doing a hell of a job here. I mean, you do it 'cuz you love DMing, and the world-building, and all of that. I know how it is, being a DM myself. But, let me restate that:

Rob's doing a hell of a job DMing this DiD stuff around. My not participating lately has in no way been because I've gotten skull-fucked - and really, the Fist of Odin kinda expects that sort of behavior from the deities - but 'cuz I've been crazy busy here.

That's it. Oh, except in a week I leave for an International Conference - the exicitng, jet-setting lifestyle of the Math Ed Grad Student! - so posting may be spotty there. We'll see about connectivity...

Yup

Sorry, I was away for the weekend. Yeah, it's weird, for whatever reason this all just cooled way down. Paul, I'll try to give you admin status, and if you know anyone who'd play, invite 'em & we can just keep on. You can keep your guy or make a new one, same world, but maybe change the focus a bit. I'll invite Steve Stamps on board. Maybe when everyone else realized that we weren't going to be boingboing darlings, they said 'fuck it'.

Marivhon

seriously guys this little hiatus or sabbatical is really lame.

Marivhon

yes.

Leveling is good.

Dave, I'll get those 4th level spells up now that you'll be needing them.
